About The Show

Come from Away is a Tony Award–nominated musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, based on the true events of September 11–15, 2001, in the small Newfoundland town of Gander. When U.S. airspace was closed after the terrorist attacks, 38 international
flights carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were diverted to Gander International Airport, doubling the town’s population overnight.

The story follows two groups of characters: the residents of Gander and the “come from aways” — stranded travelers from around the world. The locals, led by Mayor Claude Elliott, open their homes, schools, and community centers to shelter, feed, and support the passengers. The musical blends humor, heartbreak, and hope, capturing the confusion, fear, and uncertainty of the passengers, alongside the generosity and resilience of the Newfoundland community.
Through a mix of folk, rock, and traditional Newfoundland music, the show highlights real-life stories of connection, cultural exchange, and compassion. Characters are inspired by actual people, such as Captain Beverly Bass, Kevin Tuerff, and Nick and
Diane, who met in Gander. The narrative alternates between the passengers’ experiences and the locals’ efforts, showing how strangers from different backgrounds bonded over shared humanity.
As U.S. airspace reopens, the stranded planes are cleared to depart. The townspeople gather for emotional farewells, exchanging gifts and promises to stay in touch. Years later, many of the passengers and Gander residents maintain the friendships they formed, and the town becomes a symbol of kindness in crisis.

The musical is not about the tragedy of 9/11 itself, but about the best people have to offer each other — a reminder that even in the darkest times, compassion and community can prevail.
